The Pleon Spring Sailing Program is designed to develop and improve racing skills of Opti and 420 sailors when the breeze is up. If your child would like to prepare for Opti Team Trials, refine their 420 skills or simply strengthen their racing game before this summer, then this is the perfect program to kick off their sailing season.
Practices are offered in a clinic format that is more structured and rigorous than the summer program experience. Having fun will still be a key element of the program, but emphasis is placed on learning new skills and racing techniques with the goal of challenging each other to improve and develop racing acumen. This is a graduated program. Each day, sailors will receive individualized attention and coaching feedback in this smaller format.
The curriculum and drills on the water will cover the following skills:
Boat Set Up / Tuning
Rig setup - tension and rake
Boat ownership and care
Straight Line Boat Speed
Boat Handling and Maneuvers
Upwind and downwind strategy
Preparing your boat for travel
Please be aware that this program is not for those new to sailing. Sailors should be comfortable sailing in 15+ knots of wind and colder conditions. For Pleon sailors, this program is targeted towards the development and race classes.
Sailors registering for the race clinics typically have previous regatta experience in championship fleet while development sailors should have previous regatta experience in green fleet.
The Program Director, Emily Croteau, will ultimately assess for which class the sailors are best suited for. If you have any questions about class placement, please send an email to email@example.com
What to Wear
Sailors are required to wear gear appropriate for Spring sailing conditions with water and air temperatures in the 30s to 40s degrees Fahrenheit. Sailors must bring and wear a PFD, drysuit or wetsuit, close-toed footwear, gloves and hat. Sailors are responsible for providing their own water and lunch.
Practices will be held on land if two of the following occur:
Wind is sustained above 20 mph
Air temperature is below 30 degrees Fahrenheit
Water temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit
The coach deems sailing conditions unsafe
The program begins April 23 and runs on 7 weekends.
Regular program days start at 11am (rigged and ready) and end at 4pm.
Saturdays will focus on developing racing sailors, and Sundays will focus on experienced racing sailors.
The second to last weekend will be a high level, 2 day Opti clinic at Pleon with coach Joakim Karlsen for both Development & Race classes.
You can either select the full Spring season or individual days:
Opti - Select the full Spring season We recommend you to select the full season, because it will best support your childs' learning path and help your child build stronger relationships with the other sailors.
Your child will be able to sail 9 days whereby 7 days are at Pleon, and 2 days are at the Youth Challenge in Newport.
The rate for the full Spring season is $750. This includes the use of a Pleon boat.
420 - Select the full Spring season We recommend you to select the full season, because it will best support your childs' learning path and help your child build stronger relationships with the other sailors.
Your child will be able to sail 8 days whereby 6 days are at Pleon, and 2 days are at the Youth Challenge in Newport.
The rate for the full Spring season is $700. This includes the use of a Pleon boat.
