Spring/Fall Sailing

Fall Sailing

Pleon Fall Program Announcement

The Pleon Fall Sailing Program is designed to develop and improve racing skills of Opti and 420 sailors when the breeze is up. If your child would like to refine their 420 or Opti skills, or simply strengthen their racing game after the summer program has concluded, then this is the perfect program to continue practicing on the water!

Skill Focus

Practices are offered in a clinic format that is more structured and rigorous than the summer program experience. Having fun will still be a key element of the program, but emphasis is placed on learning new skills and racing techniques with the goal of challenging each other to improve and develop racing acumen. The fall program has a graduated curriculum, meaning skills build on each other as the program progresses. Each day, sailors will receive individualized attention and coaching feedback in this smaller format.

The curriculum and drills on the water will cover the following skills:

1.     Boat Set Up / Tuning

Rig setup - tension and rake

Sail controls

Boat ownership and care

2.    Straight Line Boat Speed

Sail trim

Weight placement

Steering

Trapeze

3.    Boat Handling and Maneuvers

Tacking

Gybing

Spinnaker

4.   Tactics

Upwind and downwind strategy

Starting

5.   Regatta Preparation

 Preparing your boat for travel

Eligibility

Please be aware that this program is not for those new to sailing. Sailors should be comfortable sailing in 15+ knots of wind and colder conditions. For Pleon sailors, this program is targeted toward the development and race classes.

Sailors registering for the race clinics typically have previous regatta experience in championship fleet while development sailors should have previous regatta experience in green fleet.

The Program Director, Emily, will ultimately assess for which class the sailors are best suited for. If you have any questions about class placement, please send an email to emily@pleon.org

What to Wear

Sailors are required to wear gear appropriate for Fall sailing conditions with colder water and air temperatures. Sailors must bring and wear a PFD, drysuit or wetsuit, close-toed footwear, gloves and hat.
Sailors are responsible for providing their own water and lunch.

Safety First

Practices will be held on land if two of the following occur:

1.     Wind is sustained above 20 mph

2.    Air temperature is below 30 degrees Fahrenheit

3.    Water temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit

4.   The Program Director and/or coach deems sailing conditions unsafe

Schedule

The program begins September 10 and runs for 7 weekends at Pleon, with an additional away regatta weekend. As a culmination of skills, the last weekend will be held at the Halloween Howl regatta at Sail Newport (October 29 and 30).

Regular program days start at 11am (rigged and ready) and end at 4pm. Saturdays will focus on developing racing sailors, and Sundays will focus on experienced racing sailors.

Fees

You can either select the Full Fall Season or Individual Days:

Opti or 420 - Select the Full Fall season
We recommend selecting the full season, because it will best support your childs' learning path and help your child build stronger relationships with the other sailors.

Your child will be able to sail 9 days whereby 7 days are at Pleon and 2 days are at the Halloween Howl at Sail Newport.

The rate for the Full Fall Season is $750. This fee includes the use of a Pleon boat if you need a charter.

Opti or 420 - Select Individual Days
If your child can only commit to a few days, Pleon can also accommodate that! The rate is $120 per day. This includes the use of a Pleon boat. For Individual Day sailors, the deadline to register for a particular weekend is the Tuesday before (for coaching and logistical purposes).

Pleon Yacht Club Membership

All registrants must be members of Pleon, which costs $50 annually. This fee is paid on the first registration for each sailor every calendar year.

Cancellation Policy

Due to high demand and COVID restrictions on class sizes once you are registered for any class/session you are committed to that day and time. If you register for a certain day and can not make it/miss it that registration is not transferable to another day. For any questions regarding our cancellation policy please contact Emily at emily@pleon.org
