Sailing Info

The purpose of Pleon is to involve young people in the sport of sailing in a fun, educational atmosphere. As a club with youth leadership and outstanding coaches, Pleon offers unique opportunities for personal growth in an environment that fosters confidence, independence, teamwork, sportsmanship and life-long friendships.

SUMMER

Our summer sailing program is for youth ages 8+ who have completed 3rd grade. Offerings include both recreational and competitive sailing classes. There are full-season and four-week, single session options as well as a two-week Intro-to-Pleon that provides a low-key way for newcomers to try it out. In addition to the instructional program, Pleon offers members a variety of fun summertime and social activities including cookouts, movie nights, dances, and theme days.

FALL

Every fall season Pleon's deep bench of talented coaches get 420 and Optimist sailors back on the water for race development clinics. The Pleon fall program is designed to improve and develop racing skills of Opti and 420 sailors when the breeze is up.

SPRING

Pleon offers a series of weekend clinics that give competitive sailors a jump on the season

LEADERSHIP

Pleon is a unique, special place. All members are under age 21 and the club itself is a parent-free zone overseen by a professional program director. As a club run by young sailors for young sailors, Pleon members have the opportunity to serve in leadership positions from committees that organize activities all the way up to flag officer roles including Commodore. Many of the older sailors also become junior instructors.

COACHING

Our high-caliber staff is chosen from all over the globe. Pleon coaches are outstanding in their sailing skills and equally talented in teaching, inspiring, and creating an environment in which young people gain confidence, value teamwork, learn self-sufficiency, and practice good sportsmanship.

BOATS

Optimists - a small, single-handed dinghy used as an entry to sailing. It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world.

Club 420s - a two-person dinghy sailed by youth all over the world, including high-school and college sailing teams.

Lasers (4.7, Radial, Full Rig) - a single-handed performance dinghy raced by youth and adults internationally. The different rig configurations provide the right amount of sail based on skill level and sailor weight.
Sonars - 23-foot keelboats that can accommodate up to 5 sailors. Pleon uses these boats for non-competitive groups, and also for teaching team-racing and match-racing.
